About the Club
The Wollongong Chess Club is the Illawarra’s home for over-the-board (OTB) chess. We meet weekly for rated tournaments across Classical, Rapid, Blitz and Chess960 formats, and welcome players of every level, from absolute beginners to titled players.
What we do
- Weekly rated tournaments. Australian Chess Federation rated, with a balanced mix of Classical, Rapid, Blitz and 960 events. See the calendar for the year ahead.
- Junior chess. The Wollongong Junior Chess Club runs weekly sessions and pathway events for under-18s. It is a separate private business, and one we are happy to point families towards.
- External events. We publicise UOW chess sessions, Sydney weekenders, the Doeberl Cup, and other tournaments worth travelling for in our newsletters.
When and where
We meet Tuesday evenings from 6:30pm at the Wollongong Collegians Auditorium, 3A Charlotte Street, Wollongong. New members can just show up; we’ll pair you with a friendly opponent and walk you through how the rating works.
Who can play
Club nights are open to high school age and above. We play inside a licensed club with a bar area beside the playing floor, and the age limit is what lets us keep using the room.
Younger players who are already strong are welcome to apply to join us early: an ACF rating of 1200 or a NSWJCL rating of 600, plus the readiness to sit a full adult tournament. We are glad when a junior is good enough to ask. The FAQ lists what we look for.
Primary-school players are welcome at the Wollongong Junior Chess Club on Thursdays, and at our online tournaments, which have no age limit.
