About the Club

The Wollongong Chess Club is the Illawarra’s home for over-the-board (OTB) chess. We meet weekly for rated tournaments across Classical, Rapid, Blitz and Chess960 formats, and welcome players of every level, from absolute beginners to titled players.

What we do

Weekly rated tournaments. Australian Chess Federation rated, with a balanced mix of Classical, Rapid, Blitz and 960 events. See the calendar for the year ahead.
Junior chess. Pathway events and friendly evenings for our junior members.
External events. We publicise UOW chess sessions, Sydney weekenders, the Doeberl Cup, and other tournaments worth travelling for in our newsletters.

When and where

We meet Tuesday evenings from 6:30pm at the Wollongong Collegians Auditorium, 3A Charlotte Street, Wollongong. New members can just show up; we’ll pair you with a friendly opponent and walk you through how the rating works.
