Deep Thinkers - Wollongong Chess Club News

13 September 2024 · Illawarra

Find out all about what the Wollongong Chess Club is up to.

Leaders Battle!

The time has come for Jay and Chayne to battle it out this Tuesday. With only 2 rounds left this is a very important round and might decide our new champion!

Preliminary Pairings

Mayhem on Board One

Bevan vs Jay promised an exciting Smith Morra and certainly delivered. Jay certainly studied hard understanding the chaos he was about to face.

Bevan got the opening advantage but unfortunately got the wrong move order in his kingside attack!

White to play, can you find the best move?

Speed Chess Championship (SCC)

After all the drama between Magnus and Hans, they were finally able to settle it over the chessboard. Magnus proving why he is the GOAT and able to bring his A game to win in a 17.5-12.5 Victory.

Magnus went on to beat Alireza by the greatest score margin in history with 23.5-7.5. The exciting final between Alireza and Magnus led to a highly memorable game where both players had 2 queens… and no other pieces!

Black to move. Can you find the best continuation? Both players had only a second on their clocks at this point!
